چکیده
Changes in mean earlywood vessel areas in mature Quercus macrocarpa were analyzed to determine possible sources of bias in paleoflood records derived from anatomical tree -ring signatures. Tree -ring cores were collected at intervals along the vertical axis of four Q. macrocarpa in a flood -prone stand near the Red River in Manitoba. The WinCELL PRO image analysis system was used to measure mean vessel areas in each annual ring. Most cores displayed a pronounced juvenile increase in mean vessel area before stabilizing between 40 and 60 years. The lowest samples from several trees contain rings with anomalously small mean vessel areas that are coincident with highmagnitude Red River floods in 1950 and 1997. The anatomical response of Q. macrocarpa appears to be conditional on the relative timing of earlywood development and flooding. Flood signatures are most strongly developed near the tree base and become less evident up the trunk. Most signatures disappear between one and three meters in height. Differences in flood response between trees are likely caused by internal differences rather than hydrological or topographic factors. Paleoflood studies based on samples obtained exclusively at breast height may miss some anatomical flood signatures and underestimate flood frequency relative to earlier intervals.

Response of conifers to UV-B and climate in mountain areas
The present study was focused to examine the combined effects of climate and ultraviolet-B radiation on conifer tree-ring density. Statistical methods were employed to extract tree responses in annual ring density and to identify functional relationship in trees when the level of ultraviolet-B radiation changes regardless of climate variations. In this study, the consideration was given to the ...
متن کاملClimate from dendrochronology: latest developments and results
This review deals with the latest developments in dendroclimatology focused on climate reconstruction. It presents results from research carried out during the period 1992–2001, when both the geographical and chronological extension of tree-ring data were greatly improved. Research projects are presently being carried out in nearly all the main forest land areas of the Subarctic and Subantarcti...
متن کاملHow well understood are the processes that create dendroclimatic records? A mechanistic model of the climatic control on conifer tree-ring growth dynamics
We develop the observational and conceptual basis for modeling conifer cambial processes as a direct but nonlinear and multivariate response to external environmental conditions. The model, here termed Vaganov-Shashkin (VS), reproduces the critical features linking climate variability to tree-ring proxy formation. We discuss recent test simulations of tree-ring width data from a variety of site...
متن کامل6. Tree-Ring Reconstructions of Fire and Climate History in the Sierra Nevada and Southwestern United States
Most of the fire history research conducted in the past century has focused on case studies and local-scale assessments of pattern and process, with an emphasis on describing typical fire frequencies in forest stands and watersheds. Dominant research themes have included the characterization and analyses of fire frequencies across ranges of topographic settings and habitats. In general, these “...
متن کاملLow-frequency signals in long tree-ring chronologies for reconstructing past temperature variability.
Preserving multicentennial climate variability in long tree-ring records is critically important for reconstructing the full range of temperature variability over the past 1000 years. This allows the putative "Medieval Warm Period" (MWP) to be described and to be compared with 20th-century warming in modeling and attribution studies. We demonstrate that carefully selected tree-ring chronologies...
